The Place bet is picking a horse to finish second. The bet also pays if your horse finishes first. Place bets usually pay less than a successful win bet unless a long-shot horse ends up finishing in the top two. That's because a Place bet gives your horse two possible finishing positions to cash.

The Show bet is picking a horse to finish third. The bet also pays if your horse finishes first or second. Del Mar Show payouts will be much lower compared to a winning Win or Place payout for the same horse. With a place bet, your horse has three possible finishing positions to cash.

Add a win, place and show bet on the same horse into one combination bet. This wager is also called an "Across the Board" bet. Some horse bettors place use this bet on multiple horses.
