We’ve been on a wild ride recently with the BCS rankings. After Alabama was toppled, Oregon briefly flirted with the top spot, along with Boise State, TCU, and a couple others. Now that the dust has settled, Auburn is now the official No. 1 team heading into Week 9 of college football betting. This week should be a pivotal moment for top ranked teams. They need to stay undefeated and win their respective matchups handily. Otherwise, they risk falling back and will find out that a late-season rally will be just that: too late.
Saturday is when the main event starts. At 3:30 PM EST, No. 5 Michigan State takes on No. 18 Iowa simultaneously as No. 6 Missouri faces No. 14 Nebraska. Is Michigan State possible No. 1 material? We’ll have to see if they can get past Iowa unscathed. No. 6 Missouri is also another hopeful, but will need to fight off a scrappy Nebraska squad in order to maintain their ranking or advance higher.
Then, at 6:00 PM EST, No. 1 Auburn takes on Mississippi in what should be an easy win for Auburn. In order to preserve that precious top ranking, Auburn has to literally destroy Mississippi, leaving no doubt in the minds of BCS officials that they deserve the top position.
Another great matchup starts at 8:00 PM EST: No. 2 Oregon versus USC. The Oregon Ducks have high hopes for the post season, and, just like Auburn, will need a decisive victory to keep the dream alive. Hopefully, USC won’t pull off the upset of the season this Saturday.
