Wow…The 2009 College football season has flown by. It feels like we were just posting the Week 1 schedule yesterday. After 14+ weeks of action, the final competitors for the BCS Bowl Game series have been selected, and there are a few interesting surprises among the group. And, as always, there’s the anti-BCS crowd screaming at the top of their lungs that we actually need a college football playoff system, not some arbitrary point system that is highly subjective.
On top of that, why all the strange names for bowl games? The “R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL” doesn’t sound like college football betting at all. Just because R+L Carriers cares to toss some money in the direction of the NCAA, doesn’t mean their brand name needs to be smeared all over the long standing bowl game names. This discussion, however, is for another post.
What can sports bettors look forward to in the College football post season?
Up until December 31, 2009, most of the games contested will be between either unranked or low ranked teams. Typically these annual matchups are regional in nature, and don’t necessarily reflect the ways and means of the BCS top 25 rankings. Action starts on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 4:30 PM EST with Fresno State vs. Wyoming in the “New Mexico Bowl”.
The first major contest between two top 25 teams is Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 8:00 PM EST between No. 18 Oregon State vs. No. 14 Brigham Young in the “MAACO Bowl Las Vegas”. Nothing will “Muffle” 🙂 the crowd’s enthusiasm for this game, that is, unless they spend too much time drinking and gambling on the strip the night before.
Another anticipated game starts Saturday, December 26, 2009 4:30 PM EST featuring No. 17 Pittsburgh against North Carolina in the “Meineke Car Care Bowl”. Then, 3.5 hours later, at 8:00 PM EST Boston College challenges No.24 USCin the “Emerald Bowl”. (Finally, a game NOT sponsored by your local grease monkey shop 🙂 Kidding of course guys, we love the fact that you bail our asses out when the mean machine breaks down).
On Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 8:00 PM SET, No. 15 Miami Florida takes on No. 25 Wisconsin in the “Champ Sports Bowl”. This should be a good game between two top ranked competitors.
Then, strap yourselves in for December 31st, 2009 and January 1, 2010 for the busiest bowl game days of the college football betting post season. Oklahoma takes on No. 21 Stanford in the “Brut Sun Bowl” at 2:00 PM EST. Later in the day, at 7:30 PM EST, No. 11 Virginia Tech plays Tennessee in the “Chick-fil-A Bowl”, which has got to be the most ridiculous bowl game name we’ve heard so far. Seriously, how about a “Purina Dog Chow” bowl? That would kick ass and get the attention of dog for sure.
New Year’s Day brings some of the most anticipated matchups of the post season. No. 13 Penn State squares off against No. 12 LSU in the “Capital One Bowl” at 1:00 PM EST. Also at 1:00 PM EST, No 16. West Virgina takes on Florida State in the “Konica Minolta Gator Bowl”. Then in the evening, No. 8 Ohio State plays No. 7 Oregon in the “Rose Bowl Game Presented By CITI” at 4:30 PM EST. The anchor game of the day starts at 8:30 PM EST, featuring No. 5 Florida against No. 3 Cincinnati in the “All State Sugar Bowl“. It will be fun to see what Tim Tebow musters for his last college game, given the fact that Florida was hoping for #1 berth most of the season.
The top game of the season will be on January 8, 2009 at 8:00 PM EST with a great contest between No. 2 Texas and No. 1 Alabama in the “CITI BCS National Championship Game”. Sam Bradford will be hurling the football for the last time of his college career against Alabama, but there’s no doubt we’ll see him again REAL soon.
