Bob Baffert’s 8 year wait for a victory in a Triple Crown event is over: Lookin at Lucky, jockeyed by rookie Martin Garcia, took the Black Eye Susans today, winning in authoritative style. Garcia, who is just 25 years old, earned his first Preakness win, after replacing veteran jockey Garret Gomez who wasn’t able to convert in the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. Trainer Baffert knew he had the race won at the final corner, noting that Garcia masterfully executed a perfect run. Baffert adds this win to his hall of fame career tally which includes several Triple Crown wins throughout the early 90’s to early 2000’s. The mid to late 2000’s were a drought for Baffert, but that unlucky streak is now history.
Favorite Super Saver and Calvin Borel got off to a great start, and were even in prime position down the back stretch. Unfortunately, Super Saver ran out of gas on the crucial home stretch sprint, settling for 8th place. Longshot Yawanna Twist was a pleasant surprise today, placing near the top of the pack. Meanwhile, Kentucky Derby contender Paddy O’ Prado was not a factor, disappointing many fans who thought he might be good for the win.
