“Dude, are you kidding me?” That sentiment was certainly on the minds of many horse bettors today, as they watched pace setters Game On Dude and First Dude fade in the final lengths of the 2010 Belmont Stakes, yielding to long shot Drosselmeyer. Jockey Mike Smith skillfully guided Drosselmeyer past the lead pack from the outside, pouring on the speed in the homestretch of the Triple Crown’s longest race course. As for other top contenders: fifth place initially went to UpTownCharlyBrown, but was later disqualified and moved back to 12th when it was discovered he lost his 8 pound lead at the start of the homestretch. Dave in Dixie with Calvin Borel at the helm settled for a disappointing 11th (after UpTownCharlyBrown’s DQ).
If you went with Drosselmeyer for the win you collected a handsome $28 payout. Meanwhile, Fly Down managed a second place finish for $6.80, with First Dude rounding out the top 3 with a $4.90 winning show bet. Overall, it was a great day for trainer Mott William and Win Star Farms LLC. Preakness winner trainer Bob Baffert was in contention today with a 4th place finish by Game On Dude. Many were not surprised that Baffert allowed rookie jockey Martin Garcia to mount for the Belmont Stakes, after a stunning performance at Pimlico two weeks ago. All things considered, Baffert and Garcia have performed remarkably during the last two Triple Crown horse racing events.
