New York legalized sports betting on April 6, 2021, with S1183, “Provides for regulation of sports betting and mobile sports wagering; defines terms; implements a tax equivalent to eight and one-half percent of sports wagering gross revenue; requires reporting; provides for civil penalties for violations; makes related provisions.”
The bill was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said “This budget continues funding for the largest-in-the-nation $311 billion infrastructure plan, establishes a groundbreaking program to provide affordable internet for low-income families and enhances public safety through police reforms, all while continuing to provide relief to New Yorkers and small businesses as we recover from the pandemic.”
The New York Division of Gaming Enforcement now regulates all New York sports betting sites in the Empire State.

How to Place Bets at New York Sportsbooks
Point Spread
The spread is the sportsbook’s estimated score difference. Lines move as a sportsbook balances its action. Depending on the sport, your New York sportsbook will offer lines for the game, first half, quarter, or period.
For example, if the New York Giants are -3, they would need to win by 4 points or more in order to cover the spread.
If the Jacksonville Jaguars are +3, they must win outright or lose by 2 or fewer points. All point spread bets would push if the final score difference is 3 points.

11/12/23 8:20pm EST | -1 -110+1 -110 |
Underdog Las Vegas Raiders - Las Vegas Raiders bettors risk $100 to win $90.91 at -110 odds.
A +1 Las Vegas Raiders underdog bet wins if the result is a tie, or they win outright. The bet pushes if they lose by 1. Your bet loses if they lose by 2 or more.
Favorite New York Jets - New York Jets bettors risk $100 to win $90.91 at -110 odds.
A -1 New York Jets favorite bet wins if they win by 2 or more. The bet pushes if they win by 1. Your bet loses if the result is a tie, or they lose outright.
Total
Bettors wager whether the combined point total will be over or under the sportsbook’s line. “O” stands for Over, “U” stands for under.
Moneyline
Choose the outright winner. Favorites have a minus value. Underdogs have a plus value. Betting $100 on the New York Giants to win at -220 odds would result in a $45 win, for example.
Parlays
A parlay combines multiple selections into a single bet. In order for the bet to win, each selection must win. If one selection loses, the entire parlay loses. Parlays can include point spread, total, moneyline, and props from one or more games.
Most sportsbooks allow you to combine selections from multiple leagues and sporting events.
Teasers
A teaser is a variation of the parlay. Bettors can buy points to shift point spread and total lines in their favor in exchange for a lower payout. Combine multiple selections to increase the payout. Teasers are typically restricted to the NFL and NBA.
Futures
A futures bet is placed at any point during the season prior to a championship, playoff, final standing, or league award announcement.
Legal New York sports betting sites have a great selection of futures bets for major US sports leagues. Choose a team or player to win in advance of the event. Bets placed earlier in the season pay more than those placed later on, though they’re harder to win.
Props
Bet on various outcomes indirectly related to a game’s final result. Decide whether a player will achieve a statistic over or under the sportsbook’s line, like the number of points, passes, tackles, goals, or hits in a game.
Sportsbooks also offer props for events unrelated to the game itself. Many enjoy betting whether the length of the Super Bowl National Anthem will go over or under the sportsbook’s line.
Most Popular Sport in New York
The state’s most popular sport is professional baseball. New Yorkers love to follow the New York Yankees and New York Mets. The Yankees play at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx while the Mets have Citi Field in Queens. The other New York professional sports teams are the New York Giants, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Buffalo Sabres. The Giants and Jets have “New York” in their name, but they play in New Jersey.
