How Soccer Betting Works
Our soccer betting guide is split into two sections. The first has the most popular soccer bets: 3-way moneyline, 2-way moneyline, totals, and the Asian handicap or goal line bet. The second discusses exotic bets. These are intended for knowledgeable soccer bettors. They’re usually not recommended for creating long-term profits. Only use exotics for fun or highly probable situations.
Soccer Moneyline Betting Video
Straight Bets
Soccer 3-Way Moneyline Betting
Alternate Names: 1×2 Bet, 3-way Bet
Bet on the outright result. Choose either team or a draw.
Minus numbers indicate how much you risk to win $100.
Plus numbers indicate how much you win for risking $100.
A minus number indicates the favorite result. Plus numbers indicate less likely results. For most games, the draw will have a plus number. Occasionally, a draw will have a minus number. That indicates the most likely result is a draw or tie score.
Soccer 3-Way Moneyline Example
Manchester United -400
Everton +1000
Draw +550
- Manchester United is the -400 favorite. Everton is the +1000 underdog. A draw has a +550 moneyline.
- In this match, the sportsbook considers a draw outcome more likely than an Everton victory.
- Man United bettors lay $400 to win $100. Everton bettors win $1,000 for risking $100. Draw bettors win $550 for risking $100.
1×2 Odds Example – Another Way to Display 3-way Moneylines
3-way moneyline odds may also be written as 1×2.
Match | 1 | X | 2 |
---|---|---|---|
Manchester United vs. Everton | -400 | +550 | +1000 |
- 1 represents the home team’s odds.
- X represents draw odds.
- 2 represents the away team’s odds.

- Chelsea bettors risk $100 to win $44.44 at -225 odds. The implied probability for Chelsea is 69.23%.
- Draw bettors risk $100 to win $375 at +375 odds. The implied probability for Draw is 21.05%.
Soccer 2-way Moneyline Betting – Tie No Bet
Alternate Names: 2-way Draw No Bet, Tie No Bet
Bet on the outright winner. No draw bet is possible. Your bet will be refunded if the game ends in a draw or tie score.
This bet is considered less risky than a 3-way moneyline because there is 1 less possibility. However, your risk and win amounts will vary in comparison to a 3-way moneyline for the same game.
A minus number indicates the favorite. A plus number indicates the underdog.
Minus numbers indicate how much you risk to win $100.
Plus numbers indicate how much you win for risking $100.
Soccer 2-way Moneyline – Tie No Bet Example
Hannover 96 +520
Bayern Munich -500
- Bayern Munich is the favorite. Hannover 96 is the underdog.
- Bayern Munich bettors lay $500 to win $100. Hannover 96 bettors win $520 for risking $100.
Alternative Odds Markup
Tie No Bet or 2-way moneyline odds also be written as 1 2.
Match | 1 | 2 |
---|---|---|
Hannover 96 vs. Bayern Munich | +520 | -500 |
- 1 represents the home team’s odds.
- 2 represents the away team’s odds.
How Vig or Juice Works With Soccer Moneylines
The juice is included in each soccer moneyline. A -180 true odds line, plus juice, may cost -190. A +260 true odds line, minus juice, might pay +250.
That means bettors choosing less likely results are rewarded with smaller wins compared to true odds. Inversely, favorite bettors must risk more than true odds.

Soccer Totals Betting
The sportsbook will set a goal total combining each team’s estimated final scores. Players bet whether the result will be over or under this number.
Soccer totals will usually be under 4 goals. The number will be higher if the teams are unevenly matched. Sportsbooks will provide the total’s juice to the right of the line. One side of the bet may have different juice than the other.
Sportsbooks will abbreviate over as “o” and under as “u”. The more expensive side will be provided. For example, 2.5 o-116 means anyone betting over 2.5 goals will lay $116 to win $100. -104 is the under juice. Under bettors would lay $104 to win $100.
Assume -110 when no number is given. That means the juice for both the over and under will be -110. Bettors taking either side lay $110 to win $100.
Soccer Total One Line Example
Getafe 2.5 o-107
Real Sociedad 2.5 u-113
- The total line is 2.5. The over has -107 juice. -113 is the corresponding under value.
- Over bettors believe the goal total will be over 2.5. They lay $107 to win $100.
- Under bettors believe the goal total will be under 2.5. They lay $113 to win $100.
Result: Final total is 3. This number is over 2.5. That means all over bettors win.
Note: No tie bets are possible with a 0.5 increment total line. The final result will either be over or under the sportsbook’s line.
Tie bets occur when the sportsbook’s line equals the final total. This happens with whole number total lines like 2, 3, or 4. Sportsbooks will refund all bets when the final result ties the total line.
France Ligue 1 Odds Example
Game |
BetMGM Bet |
---|---|
Brest
AS Monaco
1:00pm EST | 2.5 o -1452.5 u +105 |
An Over 2.5 bet wins if the total is 3 or more. Your Over 2.5 bet loses if the total is 2 or fewer, or a 0-0 draw.
Taking the Under - Under bettors risk $100 to win $105 at +105 odds.An Under 2.5 bet wins if the total is 2 or fewer, or a 0-0 draw. Your Under 2.5 bet loses if the total result is 3 or more.
Soccer Total Split Line Example
Olympique Lyon 3.25 o+100
Monaco 3.25 u-120
This is a split total line. You will be betting against 3 and 3.5 simultaneously.
Split total lines can also be displayed as two numbers. The following is another way of writing the 3.25 total line:
Olympique Lyon 3, 3.5 o+100
Monaco 3, 3.5 u-120
How Split Total Lines Work
Using the example 3.25 total line, your bet will be split against each half closest to 3.25. That means half your wager goes against 3 and the other half against 3.5.
A $200 bet becomes 2 separate $100 wagers. One goes against the lower total, 3. The goes other against the higher total, 3.5.
Another common total is 2.75. Here, half your bet goes against 2.5 and the other half against 3. The same holds for a 1.75 split total line. Half goes against 1.5, the other half against 2.
How Split Total Odds Work
Consider a 3.25 total line with +100 odds on the over. +100 odds means you are risking $100 to win $100. This particular bet pays even money. Your $100 bet gets split into two $50 bets. One goes against over 3 goals, the other against over 3.5 goals. Each winning bet pays $50 each, for a maximum win of $100.
Now for the under. The 3.25 total line has -120 odds on the under. That means you risk $120 to win $100. Your $120 bet gets split into two $60 bets. One goes against under 3 goals, the other against under 3.5 goals. Each winning bet pays $50 each, for a maximum win of $100.
In this case, under bettors are paying the juice on the bet. However, when the odds are -110 for both the over and under, both sides are paying the juice.
Example Soccer Split Total Over 3.25 +100 Outcomes
Risk $100 to win $100. $50 goes against over 3, the other $50 against over 3.5.
Goal Total | Over 3 Result | Over 3½ Result |
---|---|---|
2 (or fewer) | Lose ½ Bet | Lose ½ Bet |
3 | Push ½ Bet ½ Refunded | Lose ½ Bet |
4 (or more) | Win ½ Bet Win $50 | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
Example Soccer Split Total Under 3.25 -120 Outcomes
Risk $120 to win $100. $60 goes against under 3, the other $60 against under 3.5.
Goal Total | Under 3 Result | Under 3½ Result |
---|---|---|
2 (or fewer) | Win ½ Bet Win $50 | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
3 | Push ½ Bet ½ Refunded | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
4 (or more) | Lose ½ Bet | Lose ½ Bet |
Split Total General Results
Use the following to assess whether your bet wins or loses:
- Over bettors win if the final total is greater than both split lines. Half their bet is refunded if the final total ties one line. They lose the other half bet on the line that’s less than the final total. They lose both bets if the final total is less than both lines.
- Under bettors win if final total is less than both split lines. Half their bet is refunded if the final total ties one line. They win the other half bet on the line that’s more than the final total. They lose both bets if the final total is more than both lines.

Soccer Asian Handicap Betting
Also called: Goal line betting or soccer spread betting.
Your bet is made on the expected score difference, just like a point spread. Most Asian handicap lines are 0.5 or 1. Occasionally, some will be 1.5 or 2.5.
Example Favorite Asian Handicap Lines
- A -0.5 Asian handicap means the favorite must win by 1 or more goals.
- A -1.5 Asian handicap means the favorite must win by 2 or more goals.
Example Underdog Asian Handicap Lines
- A +0.5 Asian handicap means the underdog must win outright or draw. A tie score means the underdog lost by less than 1 goal.
- A +1.5 Asian handicap means the underdog must win outright, draw, or not lose by more than 1.
The number to the right of the line is the sportsbook’s odds or juice. Read more about vigorish or juice here.
Asian Handicap One Line Example
Southampton +0.5 -109
Arsenal -0.5 -111
- Arensal is the favorite. Arsenal must win by 1 or more goals. Risk $111 to win $100.
- Southampton is the underdog. They must win outright or draw. Risk $109 to win $100.
If the final score is Arsenal 1-0 Southampton, Arsenal bettors win. Their 1 goal margin of victory is greater than the -0.5 Asian handicap.
Underdog Southampton bettors would win if the final score was Arsenal 1-2 Southampton. In this case, Southampton has won outright.
Finally, consider what happens if there’s a draw or tie. If the final score is Arsenal 1-1 Southampton, Southampton bettors win. The draw, or 0 goal difference, is less than Southampton’s +0.5 Asian handicap.
Note: No pushes or tie bets are possible when the Asian handicap has a 0.5 number increment. Either the favorite or underdog will win.
Tie Asian handicap bets occur when the final score difference equals the handicap line. Games with whole number Asian handicaps like 1, 2, or 3 can result in tie bets if the final score difference equals the sportsbook’s line.
Asian Handicap Split Line Example
Hertha BSC +1.25 -115
FC Augsburg -1.25 -105
This is a split Asian handicap line. You will be betting against 1 and 1.5 simultaneously.
Split Asian handicap lines can also be displayed as two numbers. The following is another way of writing the 1.25 total line:
Hertha BSC +1, +1.5 -115
FC Augsburg -1, -1.5 -105
How Asian Handicap Split Lines Work
Using the example 1.25 Asian handicap split line, your bet will be split against each half closest to 1.25. That means half your wager goes against 1 and the other half against 1.5.
A $100 bet becomes 2 separate $50 wagers. One goes against the lower line, 1. The goes other against the higher line, 1.5.
Another common Asian handicap line is 1.75. Here, half your bet goes against 1.5 and the other half against 2. The same holds for a 2.25 split line. Half goes against 2, the other half against 2.5.
How Asian Handicap Split Odds Work
Consider a -1.25 Asian handicap for favorite FC Augsburg. -105 odds means you are risking $105 to win a $100. Your $105 bet gets split into two $52.50 bets. One bet goes against Augsburg by -1, the other against Augsburg by -1.5. Each winning bet pays $50, for a maximum win of $100.
What about the underdog Hertha BSC and their +1.25 split line? -115 odds means you are risking $115 to win $100. Your $115 bet gets split into two $57.50 bets. One goes against Hertha by +1, the other against Hertha by +1.5. Like betting on the favorite Augsburg, each winning bet pays $50 for a maximum win of $100.
Example Favorite -1.25 -105 Asian Handicap Outcomes
Risk $105 to win $100. $52.50 goes against Augsburg by -1, the other $52.50 against Augsburg by -1.5.
Winning Margin | -1 Line | -1.5 Line |
---|---|---|
0 (or lose outright) | Lose ½ Bet | Lose ½ Bet |
1 | Push ½ Bet $52.50 Refunded | Lose ½ Bet |
2 (or more) | Win ½ Bet Win $50 | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
Example Underdog +1.25 -115 Asian Handicap Outcomes
Risk $115 to win $100. $57.50 goes against Hertha by +1, the other $57.50 against Hertha by +1.5.
Losing Margin | +1 Line | +1.5 Line |
---|---|---|
0 (or win outright) | Win ½ Bet Win $50 | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
1 | Push ½ Bet $57.50 Refunded | Win ½ Bet Win $50 |
2 (or more) | Lose ½ Bet | Lose ½ Bet |
Asian Handicap Split Line General Results

They lose the other half bet on the line that’s less than the score difference. Favorite bettors lose both bets if the final score difference is less than both lines.
- Underdog bettors win if their team wins outright. Underdog bettors also win if the losing margin is less than both lines. Half their bet is refunded if the score difference ties one line. Limit multiple selections to 2. Choose the most likely possibilities. Two losing selections would cost your bankroll dearly. One losing losing selection would eat into the profits of your winning selection.
Soccer Double Chance Bet
A soccer match can result in 3 possible outcomes: the home team wins, the away team wins, or a draw or tie score.
Your sportsbook will create pairs of results from all 3 possible outcomes. Choose the most likely pair. All odds are moneylines.
Pair | Result 1 | Result 2 |
---|---|---|
1 | Home Wins | Away Wins |
2 | Home Wins | Draw |
3 | Away Wins | Draw |
How to Place a Double Chance Bet
- Find the “Double Chance” bet for your match. You may have to tap one of the teams or the matchup time to view additional bets.
- Moneyline odds will be provided for each pair of outcomes.
- Select one or more results.
More Double Chance Bet Info
We recommend picking one result pair only. Choosing two pairs would cover more possibilities. But it would be an expensive bet for a modest payout. Only one of your pairs can win. That means the other loses.
Soccer Parlay Betting
Combine 2 or more moneyline, Asian handicaps, or total selections. Your soccer parlay wins if all selections win. The parlay loses if any selection loses.
Each tie reduces the total number of selections by one. Therefore, a 5 selection parlay with 1 tie becomes a 4 selection parlay. An 8 selection parlay with 2 ties becomes a 6 selection parlay. Your actual payout will correspond to the adjusted parlay size.
Asian handicap split lines are usually treated as 2 different bets within a larger parlay. Carefully review your sportsbook’s rules to understand how ties affect your parlay bets.
How to Place a Soccer Parlay Bet
- Select 2-15 moneylines, Asian handicaps, totals or combinations of all three.
- Include point spreads, totals, and moneylines from other sports like American football, basketball or hockey.
- All selections must be correct to win.
- Each tie reduces parlay size by 1 selection. Review your sportsbook’s parlay rules carefully.

Soccer Betting FAQs
The most popular soccer straight bets include the 3-way moneyline, “Draw No Bet” or 2-way moneyline, and goal total. The Asian Handicap is commonly bet on European soccer matches.
Popular soccer exotic bets include the parlay, prop bets, correct score bet, double chance bet, and the halftime/fulltime bet. While serious sports bettors don’t place exotic wagers as often as straight bets, they can be carefully deployed to capitalize on a good opportunity. Soccer parlay bets, in particular, can be more profitable for winning sports bettors than separate straight bets.
We recommend fading the public to determine which team to bet on. When 80% of the betting public is on the favorite team, it’s safe to say the underdog represents a better opportunity. In fact, the Draw No Bet odds may be skewed in such a way that an underdog victory would produce a generous payout.
Soccer prop bets for both the game and individual players are legal in most US States, with the exception of any NCAA college soccer game. Refer to your sportsbook’s wagering menu and house rules for more information.
The sportsbook will offer odds for a number of potential game results. Choose one or more of the results and place a bet. You win if one of the outcomes you selected matches the final score.
The sportsbook will offer odds for combinations of either side or a draw to be the halftime and fulltime game result. Note that your both your halftime (1st half) and fulltime (game) selection must be correct to win the bet.
Pick from one of three pairs of possible final results: home team or away team wins, home team or draw, away team or draw. Your bet wins if you selected a pair that contains the final game outcome. For example, a home team/draw double chance bet wins if the home team wins or the game ends in a draw.
