All-Time Undefeated NFL Teams
The following is the all-time list of NFL teams with undefeated regular seasons. We’ve also notated their postseason results when available.
2007-08 New England Patriots
- Record – 16-0 Regular Season, 2-1 Playoffs
- Coach – Bill Belichick
- Top Players – Tom Brady and Randy Moss
- Playoff Results
- Won, 31-20 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Divisional Round)
- Won, 21-12 vs. San Diego Chargers (AFC Championship)
- Lost, 17-14 vs. New York Giants (Super Bowl)
- Key Matchup – 38-35 victory over New York Giants to clinch perfect 16-0 season
- Player Awards
- AP Coach of the Year – Bill Belichick
- AP NFL MVP – Tom Brady
- AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year – Tom Brady
The Patriots acquired Randy Moss and a seventh-round pick in exchange for a third-round pick. He had not made an All-Pro team since 2003, and New England had not won a Super Bowl since February 6, 2005. Tom Brady and company were ready for a fantastic season after dropping the previous season’s AFC Championship to the Indianapolis Colts. Bill Belichick, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, defensive coordinator Dean Pees and the Patriots began the season on a fantastic note, as they dominated at all phases of the game.
The Patriots scored more than 30 points in each of their first eight games of the season. In the first three weeks of the season (at Jets, vs. Chargers, and vs. Bills), New England scored exactly 38 points in each game. New York, San Diego, and Buffalo combined for a measly 35 points in those three contests. Then, the Patriots increased their points output from Week 5 to Week 8, as they had an impressive blowout of the Washington Redskins on October 28. With their 52-7 win over Washington, the Patriots moved to 8-0.
After New England’s bye week in Week 10, the Patriots stepped up their game even more, as they scored 56 points in a 46-point destruction of the Buffalo Bills. After a couple of one-score wins, the Patriots hosted the Steelers (won 34-13), the Jets (won 20-10), and the Dolphins (won 28-7). Then, it was the grand finale of the regular season, as New England searched for perfection, and Brady, Moss, and company got it. The Patriots went to New Jersey and won, 38-35, against the New York Giants to cement the perfect 16-0 season.
The Patriots went on to beat the Jaguars and Chargers in the playoffs, but lost to those very same Giants in the Super Bowl, 17-14. The perfect regular season ended with an 18-1 record combined in the season and playoffs. It was still a stellar season, as these Patriots set many regular season records in 2007, and the most notable were the following: most games won (16), most points on the road (314), and highest point differential (+315).
In addition, Randy Moss set the record for the most receiving touchdowns in a single season with 23. Of course, Tom Brady was responsible for those touchdown passes, as he threw 50 that season, which was an NFL passing touchdown record that would stand until 2013.
A truly unbelievable season happened in 2007 with the Patriots, and it may never be matched over the course of a season that includes 19 games or more.
1972-73 Miami Dolphins
- Record – 14-0 Regular Season, 3-0 Playoffs
- Coach – Don Shula
- Top Players – Larry Csonka, Mercury Morris, Jim Langer, Larry Little, Earl Morrall, and Jake Scott
- Playoff Results
- Won, 20-14 vs. Cleveland Browns (Divisional Round)
- Won, 21-17 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC Championship)
- Won, 14-7 vs. Washington Redskins (Super Bowl)
- Key Matchup – 16-0 victory vs. Baltimore Colts to clinch perfect 14-0 season
- Player Awards
- Coach of the Year – Don Shula
- Comeback Player of the Year – Earl Morrall
- Super Bowl MVP – Jake Scott
The 2007 Patriots were unable to get their perfect 19-0 season, which meant that the only remaining perfect team in the regular season and playoffs was the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Founded by Joe Robbie in 1966, the Dolphins have had an intriguing history, as their only championships came in the 1970s (Super Bowls VII and VIII), and their only conference championships came in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1966 to 1986, the Dolphins played at the Miami Orange Bowl, their stadium in Miami, Florida.
Don Shula, former head coach of the Baltimore Colts, had taken over as the head coach of the Dolphins in 1970 and entered his third season as Dolphins head coach in 1972. Shula was an outstanding NFL coach and arguably one of the best of all time for any sport. He led the Colts to a conference championship in 1968. Heading into the 1972 NFL season, the Dolphins were not happy after being shut out in the AFC Championship Game, 21-0, at the hands of the Baltimore Colts.
The 1972 season began at Kansas City, as the Dolphins beat the Chiefs, 20-10. Miami’s first offensive explosion of the season happened in Week 2 when Miami won 34-13, against the visiting Houston Oilers. After a couple of road victories, the Dolphins returned home and beat the Chargers by 14 points and then the Bills by 1 point. Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris combined for three touchdowns in the Week 7 shutout, 23-0 against the Colts. That was the perfect revenge for Shula and the Dolphins.
Next, the Dolphins had a 52-0 blowout of the Patriots for an unbelievable Week 9 win. Then, there were two more home wins, and then a couple of road victories at New England and the New York Giants. The grand finale to the regular season was, of course, against the Colts, and the Dolphins won in a shutout fashion again, 16-0.
After completing the perfect 14-0 regular season, the Dolphins beat the Browns (20-14), Steelers (21-17), and finally the Redskins (14-7) in the Super Bowl to complete the amazing 17-0 year.
We will leave you with one last note. There are rumors of an urban legend about this Dolphins team. During every season, when the last remaining undefeated NFL team loses its first game, all the surviving members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins open bottles of champagne in celebration. It is a fun way to think of the greats from that amazing 1972 Dolphins squad. It will be interesting to see how many more years they will be able to have this annual celebration.
1942 Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are responsible for both Pre-Super Bowl-era undefeated regular seasons. In 1942, the Chicago Bears dominated the NFL West’s Division with multiple coaches.
- Record – 11-0 Regular Season, 0-1 Lost Championship
- Coaches – George Halas and temporary co-coaches Hunk Anderson and Luke Johnsos
- Top Players – Bulldog Turner and George Musso
- Key Matchup – Opening Day 44-28 victory at the Green Bay Packers
Head coach George Halas began the 1942 season as the head coach of the two-time defending NFL champion Chicago Bears. After the first five games of the season, Halas entered the Navy again for World War II. Hunk Anderson and Luke Johnsos took on as temporary co-coaches for the Bears as they endeavored on the three-peat. Halas went 5-0 in his games, including a 44-28 win against the Packers to begin the season.
Then, the co-coaches finished the regular season 6-0. From the eighth game of the season to the end of the regular season, the Bears allowed a combined 14 points, as Chicago scored 199 points.
Unfortunately, the Bears lost in the NFL Championship, 14-6, to the Washington Redskins on December 13, 2024.
1934 Chicago Bears
- Record – 13-0 Regular Season, 0-1 Lost Championship
- Coach – George Halas
- Top Players – Red Grange, Bill Hewitt, Walt Kiesling, and Bronko Nagurski
- Key Matchup – Opening Day 24-10 win at the Green Bay Packers
Head coach George Halas had a stellar football career, and that included eight NFL championships. Just like in 1942, the 1934 Bears entered the season as two-time defending champions. After winning the NFL championship in 1932 and 1933, the Chicago Bears sought a three-peat.
Halas coached the entire 1934 season, and it began with a 24-10 victory at Green Bay. The Bears were fantastic all season in 1934, as they allowed double-digit points in just two of their 13 regular season games. Chicago had its best offensive output on October 21 when the Bears won, 41-7, against the Cincinnati Reds.
Unfortunately, the result of the 1934 season was also a loss in the championship game, a 30-13 loss to the New York Giants.
