NFL Safety to be Scored Prop Bet Odds

Safeties aren’t a common occurrence, but the safety to be scored prop bet gets a lot of looks from both pro and recreational bettors alike. It’s also one of the most popular NFL prop bets fans discuss before the Super Bowl. Placing the bet is simple: bet “Yes” if you think a safety will happen during the game, bet “No” if you don’t.

Handicap this wager carefully: safeties don’t occur that often. On average, a safety happens once a week during the regular season. In most cases odds for a safety will be a high plus moneyline value, sometimes in excess of +1000. Anything less, like +650, suggests that at least one team is prone to turning over the ball near the endzone.

Below, we’ll display the odds of a safety happening in upcoming NFL matchups.

About the Safety to be Scored Prop Bet

Decide whether or not a safety will be scored in a particular matchup. Most sports betting sites offer this prop bet for games throughout the NFL season, including the preseason. Betting on a safety is most popular during the postseason, especially for the Super Bowl.

Bet “No” if you don’t think a safety will be scored, or bet “Yes” if you think one will. A bet on “Yes” also wins if two or more safeties happen during the game.

The most likely outcome, or favorite side, will have minus odds. In most cases, this will be “No”. A minus value indicates how much you risk to win $100. If the odds for “No” are -1500, you’d risk $1,500 to win $100. Similarly, if the odds are -1000, you’d risk $1000 to win $100.

The less likely outcome, or underdog side, will have plus odds. This will usually be the case for “Yes”. A plus value indicates how you much win if you risk $100. If the odds for “Yes” are +600, you’d win $600 for risking $100. Likewise, if the odds are +3000, you’d win $3,000 for a $100 bet.

Most of the time, odds for each side will be far apart. For example, “Yes” might be +1000 and “No” -3000. Odds will be closer when there’s a fair chance that a safety will be scored.

The following rules determine when a safety is scored in the NFL. These rules hold whether it’s a preseason, regular season, or postseason game.

  • A player with possession of the ball is tackled or pushed out of bounds in their own endzone.
  • The defending team is responsible for making the ball dead in the endzone, with the exception of a forward pass.
  • The offense commits a foul in its own endzone.

The most common situations resulting in a safety are:

  • The quarterback is sacked in the endzone.
  • A player running the ball is tackled in the endzone.
  • A player receiving the ball outside the endzone is forced back into the endzone.
