Here are some of the biggest NFL rivalries organized by division. Recall that each NFL team faces its division opponents twice – once at home and once on the road – for a total of six divisional games per season. That means your favorite teams get to settle the score two times each regular season. Learn more about the history of each rivalry, notable games, and recent matchup results. Then have a look at each team’s current and past season standings.
NFL football rivalries often attract substantial public betting interest. That means there could be an opportunity to fade the public if a large number of recreational gamblers have placed bets on their favorite team, regardless of whether the team can cover the sportsbook’s line.

- Rivalry Began: September 18, 1966 at War Memorial Stadium
- Rivalry Name: Bills–Dolphins
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2016 Week 16 Miami 34-Buffalo 31
- 2021 Week 2 Buffalo 35-Miami 0
The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins dates back to the 1960s when they were both teams in the American Football League. After the AFL-NFL merger, both teams joined the National Football League’s AFC East in 1970.
In 2016, the Dolphins swept the season series from the Bills, and on Christmas Eve, Miami was searching for its 10th win of the season. After scoring a combined 21 points in the first half, the teams each scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter. With 1:20 remaining in regulation, Dolphins kicker Andrew Franks kicked a 55-yard field goal to tie the game. In overtime, the Bills won the coin toss, but Buffalo kicker Dan Carpenter missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. Later in overtime, Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi’s big 57-yard run set up the game-winning 27-yard field goal.
In 2021, the Bills swept the season series from the Dolphins. The first of those two contests was played in Miami. The Bills could not be stopped in the game. Josh Allen threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Zack Moss ran for two touchdowns and Devin Singletary ran for one as well. The 35-0 loss was one of the worst home losses for Miami in history. The Bills would go on to finish the season with an 11-6 record while the Dolphins went 9-8.
On January 15, 2023, the Bills hosted the Dolphins for a Wild Card Round game, and the Bills won, 34-31. Buffalo scored the first 17 points of the game, but Miami battled back with 17 points in a row. The Dolphins even took the lead on a fumble return for a touchdown. Josh Allen threw a couple of touchdown passes to lead the Bills to the playoff victory.

Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh
- Rivalry Began: October 7, 1950
- Rivalry Name: The Turnpike Rivalry
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2018 Week 1 Cleveland 21-Pittsburgh 21
- 2020-21 Wild Card Round Cleveland 48-Pittsburgh 37
Dating back to 1950, the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers have been battling as a part of the Turnpike Rivalry. Even after owner Art Modell moved the original Browns franchise to Baltimore in 1995, Cleveland reestablished the Browns in 1999 as a continuation of the franchise. The Browns-Steelers rivalry continued to have the same passion as before.
More than 67,000 fans watched an exciting game at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland during the first week of the 2018 season. The Browns, who did not win a game during the 2017 season, were trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter of the Week 1 contest. Browns running back Carlos Hyde ran for a touchdown and Tyrod Taylor threw a touchdown to Josh Gordon, tying the score. Neither team scored in overtime, and the contest ended, 21-21. Cleveland would end up playing four overtime games that season.
In 2020, the Browns finally began to get back to their winning ways, as they won double-digit games for the first time since 2007. Cleveland last made the playoffs in 2002-03, and the Browns had the same opponent on both January 5, 2003 and January 10, 2021: the Steelers. Cleveland won, 48-37. The Browns scored the first 28 points of the game and won their first playoff win since 1994. Baker Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns.
The January 10, 2021 Wild Card Round game was the final home postseason game for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. It was his only career playoff game against the Browns. In 2021, Roethlisberger and the Steelers bounced back to sweep the season series against the Browns. Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. In 2022 and 2023, the Browns and Steelers split the season series.

Indianapolis vs. Houston
- Rivalry Began: September 22, 2002
- Rivalry Name: Colts-Texans
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2016 Week 6 Houston 26-Indianapolis 23
- 2018-19 Wild Card Round Indianapolis 21-Houston 7
The first game between the Colts and Texans came in 2002 when the Texans joined the league as an expansion team. Indianapolis dominated the rivalry throughout the 2000s, as the Colts lost just one game to Houston.
The rivalry was more competitive in the 2010s. On October 16, 2016, the Texans hosted the Colts at NRG Stadium, and Houston won, 26-23, in overtime. Sunday Night Football was a fun one, as Houston scored 14 fourth-quarter points to overcome a 14-point deficit. Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler threw for two touchdown passes in the game, and kicker Nick Novak made the game-winning field goal in overtime.
In 2018, Bill O’Brien’s Texans entered Week 14 on a nine-game winning streak, and they were hoping to improve their spot in the standings. Andrew Luck’s Colts bounced back with a 24-21 victory to avenge Indianapolis’ overtime loss to Houston in Week 4. Luck threw for 399 yards and two touchdowns in the win, and this victory was the first of four consecutive wins for the Colts. Indianapolis and Houston would meet in the Wild Card Round, and the Colts would be victorious again. Luck threw another two touchdowns in the playoff victory. The win was the final playoff victory for the Colts quarterback, and he finished his career with an even 4-4 record in the postseason.
Luck retired after the 2018 season, and he finished his career with a 7-4 record – including the regular season and postseason – against the Texans. Luck’s highest career passing yards game came on September 30, 2018, when he threw for 464 yards and four touchdowns. He also had career highs in completions (40) and passing attempts (62). However, the impressive performance came in a 37-34 loss to the Texans, as Deshaun Watson scored three touchdowns.

Kansas City vs. Las Vegas/Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders
- Rivalry Began: September 16, 1960
- Rivalry Name: Chiefs-Raiders
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2019 Week 13 Kansas City 40-Oakland 9
- 2020 Week 5 Las Vegas 40-Kansas City 32
The rivalry between the Chiefs and Raiders began in 1960 when they were a part of the AFL. At the time, the Raiders were in Oakland while the Chiefs were known as the Dallas Texans. In 1963, they moved to Kansas City to become the Chiefs. After the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, both teams entered the NFL. In 1982, the Oakland Raiders became the Los Angeles Raiders, and they then returned to Oakland in 1995.
On December 1, 2019, the Chiefs dominated the Week 13 matchup against the Raiders. Kansas City won, 40-9, as the Chiefs scored in every quarter. Patrick Mahomes scored two touchdowns, and two Chiefs running backs ran for touchdowns. The Chiefs victory completed the season sweep of the Raiders, and Kansas City went on to win its first Super Bowl in 50 years. The Raiders moved from Oakland to Las Vegas at the end of the 2019 season.
Coming off an impressive Super Bowl victory, the defending champion Chiefs lost just two regular season games in the 2020 season, and one of those two losses came against the Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas came in as big underdogs against the undefeated Chiefs. Including the playoffs, the Chiefs entered the game on a 13-game winning streak. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Carr and the Raiders put up another good fight against the Chiefs later in the season, but Kansas City won the second matchup, 35-31. Las Vegas finished the 2020 season with an 8-8 record while the Chiefs went 14-2, which marked the first time in Kansas City Chiefs franchise history that the team won 14 games.

Dallas vs. Philadelphia
- Rivalry Began: September 30, 1960
- Rivalry Name: Cowboys-Eagles
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2013 Week 17 Philadelphia 24-Dallas 22
- 2017 Week 11 Philadelphia 37-Dallas 9
Both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have had a lot of success over the years, and their rivalry began with the inception of the Cowboys in 1960. In 1960, the Eagles won the NFL Championship. Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach and legendary head coach Tom Landry won Super Bowls VI and XII.
The two best teams in the NFC East division in 2013 were the Eagles and Cowboys. In Week 7, the Eagles beat the Cowboys, 17-3. Then in Week 17, a sold-out AT&T Stadium saw their Cowboys lose, 24-22. Chip Kelly’s Eagles were the favorites heading into the game, but Jason Garrett’s Cowboys kept it close. Dan Bailey’s third consecutive field goal brought the Cowboys’ deficit down to one point, as Dallas trailed, 17-16, in the third quarter. The Cowboys did not have a lead in the game, as they went on to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year. Nick Foles threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns in the Philadelphia win. The Eagles made the playoffs but lost in the Wild Card Round.
Philadelphia had an even better team in 2017, and in Doug Pederson’s second season as the Eagles head coach, he helped the squad to an impressive 13-3 record. In Week 11, the Eagles and Cowboys played in Dallas. This Sunday Night Football contest turned out to be a low-scoring first half, as just 16 points were scored combined by the two teams. In the third quarter, the Eagles went on to score 16 points by themselves. Philadelphia scored 14 more in the fourth quarter to make it 30 unanswered points in the 37-9 victory. Those Eagles won Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots.

Green Bay vs. Chicago
- Rivalry Began: November 27, 1921
- Rivalry Name: Packers-Bears
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2013 Week 17 Green Bay 33-Chicago 28
- 2018 Week 1 Green Bay 24-Chicago 23
The NFL’s oldest rivalry is one of its best. In 2013, the Chicago Bears hosted the Green Bay Packers for a win-and-in battle in Week 17. The winner of the contest determined the NFC North divisional title. Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn had filled in for an injured Aaron Rodgers to keep Green Bay in contention. Rodgers was healthy enough to return for the end of the regular season. With Green Bay trailing by one point and 38 seconds remaining in the game, Rodgers connected with Randall Cobb for a 48-yard touchdown. The touchdown pass gave the Packers the lead for good, and Green Bay made the playoffs.
On September 9, 2018, the Packers and Bears played a Week 1 matchup at Lambeau Field. The Bears jumped out to a 20-0 lead, but it was the Packers who made another strong fourth quarter. Rodgers went down with an injury early in the game, but he returned in the second half. Rodgers was responsible for all three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cobb was the recipient of another late-game touchdown from Rodgers. The 75-yard catch with 2:13 remaining gave the Packers the 24-23 win. Although Green Bay won this Week 1 game, the Bears would beat the Packers later in the season. Chicago ended up winning the NFC North division in 2018.
After Rodgers won the MVP award in 2020 and 2021, his final Packers season came in 2022. His last time playing against the Bears as a Packer came at Soldier Field on December 4, 2022. The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Chicago led, 16-3, in the second quarter, but in typical Rodgers fashion, he and the Packers came back. They outscored the Bears, 18-0, in the fourth quarter. Green Bay won, 28-19.

Atlanta vs. New Orleans
- Rivalry Began: November 20, 1967
- Rivalry Name: Falcons-Saints
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2017 Week 16 New Orleans 23, Atlanta 13
- 2018 Week 3 New Orleans 43, Atlanta 37
In the 2017 Christmas Eve showdown between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons, Drew Brees’ Saints were looking for revenge. On December 7, 2017, the Falcons beat the visiting Saints, 20-17. Then on December 24, 2017, New Orleans jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Brees’ 54-yard touchdown pass gave New Orleans the 13-point lead before halftime. Saints running back Mark Ingram ran for a 26-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and the 20-3 lead was too much for the Falcons. The NFC South division was an impressive one in 2017, as three teams — including the divisional champion Saints (11-5), Panthers (11-5), and Falcons (10-6) — made the playoffs. New Orleans and Atlanta each won their Wild Card Round games.
The Saints returned the following season looking for success, as head coach Sean Payton had New Orleans firing on all cylinders. The Saints offense could not be stopped, as Brees and company were regularly scoring more than 40 points. On September 23, 2018, the Falcons hosted the Saints and put up a fight. Brees threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns while Matt Ryan registered 374 yards and five touchdowns. The game went to overtime, and Brees rushed for a touchdown for the win. The 2018 season marked his career best in terms of rushing touchdowns, as the Saints quarterback ran for four that season. He threw for 32 touchdowns and was second in MVP voting in 2018.
In 2019, Brees and the Saints split the season series with the Falcons. Taysom Hill scored two touchdowns in the 26-18 New Orleans win on November 28, 2019. Brees’ final NFL season came in 2020, but he missed both contests against the Falcons. Brees finished his football career with a 19-10 record against the Falcons.

San Francisco vs. Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams
- Rivalry Began: October 1, 1950
- Rivalry Name: 49ers-Rams
- Recent Notable Games:
- 2019 Week 16 San Francisco 34-Los Angeles 31
- 2021-22 NFC Championship Game Los Angeles 20-San Francisco 17
In 2019, Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers swept the season series against the Los Angeles Rams. On October 13, 2019, the 49ers were looking great, as they defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 20-7, and moved their record to 5-0 on the season. San Francisco won its first eight games of the season, but as the season progressed, the Seattle Seahawks were on the 49ers’ trail in the NFC West standings.
In Week 16, the Rams were hoping to sneak in as a wild card as well as play spoiler to the 49ers. The December 21, 2019 matchup in San Francisco was a great one, as Jimmy Garoppolo’s 49ers and Jared Goff’s Rams went back and forth. Garoppolo led a game-winning drive in the final minutes, and 49ers kicker Robbie Gould made a 33-yard field goal to win the game, 34-31. San Francisco had a fantastic season but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.
Just two seasons later, the Rams and 49ers met in the NFC Championship Game. This time around, it was Matthew Stafford starting under center for the Rams. Stafford’s first season with the Rams was very impressive, as he led the team to a 12-5 record in 2021. Interestingly, Stafford’s Rams lost both of their regular season meetings against the 49ers. In the NFC Championship Game on January 30, 2022, the 49ers had a double-digit lead entering the fourth quarter. Stafford led a tremendous comeback. He found Cooper Kupp for their second touchdown of the game. The Rams scored two more field goals to win the game, 20-17. Los Angeles went on to win the Super Bowl against the Bengals.
