Alabama vs. Auburn

  • Rivalry Name: Iron Bowl
  • Notable Games:
    • 2013 Week 14 Auburn 34-Alabama 28

    • 2023 Week 14 Alabama 27-Auburn 24

Rivalry History

The Iron Bowl between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers is one of the best rivalries in all of sports. These two in-state rivals are very close to each other, as Tuscaloosa and Auburn are separated by just a three-hour drive within the state of Alabama.

The Iron Bowl has seen many instant classics, and the 2013 matchup was no exception with the “Kick Six.” On November 30, 2013, No. 4 Auburn entered the contest 10-1 while No. 1 Bama was undefeated. In front of its home crowd, Auburn had the ball with Bama leading, 28-21, with just a few minutes left in the game. Auburn went down the field and Sammie Coates caught a 39-yard touchdown to tie the contest. Then, Bama had a chance to win the game. Crimson Tide running back T.J. Yeldon ran for 24 yards down to the Auburn 38-yard-line. With one second to go, Bama kicker Adam Griffith attempted to win the game with a 57-yard field goal. Griffith’s kick was short, and Auburn’s Chris Davis returned the kick 109 yards. The home crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium saw a historic game that day.

Then on November 27, 2021, 6-5 Auburn had the chance to upset 11-1 Bama, as they played their first overtime game in Iron Bowl history. It was not just any overtime game, as the contest went to four overtimes. Entering this contest, Auburn’s second-string quarterback TJ Finley had thrown just 65 pass attempts on the season. He fought hard and had two passing touchdowns for the only time all season, as unranked Auburn had No. 3 Alabama on the ropes. Auburn and Bama matched each other throughout the first three overtimes, but it was future NFL quarterback Bryce Young who completed a pass to John Metchie III to win the game in the fourth overtime, 24-22.

No. 8 Bama took on unranked Auburn in 2023, and this contest had an exciting finish known as the “Fourth and 31.” Bama was trailing late in the game, but quarterback Jalen Milroe led the Crimson Tide down the field. With under five minutes remaining in the game and Bama down four points, Milroe ran for 11 yards and 19 yards. However, the Crimson Tide had difficulty moving the ball in the red zone on first and second down. A botched snap led to an 18-yard loss, forcing the Crimson Tide back to the Auburn 26-yard-line. On fourth and goal, Milroe found Isaiah Bond for the go-ahead 31-yard touchdown. The 27-24 win marked Bama’s fourth straight Iron Bowl win.

Florida vs. Georgia

  • Rivalry Began: October 15, 1904 in Macon, Georgia
  • Rivalry Name: The Florida-Georgia Game
  • Notable Games:
    • 2012 Week 9 Georgia 17-Florida 9
    • 2020 Week 10 Florida 44-Georgia 28
    • 2023 Week 9 Georgia 43-Florida 20

Rivalry History

The Florida-Georgia game, also known as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, has been played annually in the city of Jacksonville, Florida for almost the entirety of the rivalry. The game is commonly discussed as the War for the Oar because the winner takes control of the prized trophy of the Okefenokee Oar, a 10-foot-long oar donated by the University of Florida in 2009. The student body president of the winning school receives the oar.

In 2012, the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs upset the No. 3 Florida Gators as Georgia beat Florida in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1980s. Todd Gurley scored the first touchdown of the game for Georgia, as the Bulldogs went on to win, 17-9. The Bulldogs had a great season that year, culminating in a Capital One Bowl victory just a few months later.

Florida has also had some success in the rivalry, and one impressive victory by the Gators was in 2020. The No. 8 Gators won, 44-28, against the No. 5 Bulldogs. Zamir White got the scoring started for the Bulldogs, but Justin Shorter, Dameon Pierce, Kyle Pitts, and Kemore Gamble each scored touchdowns. Future NFL kicker Evan McPherson was also busy that day, as he made all five of his extra points and three of his four field goals.

In 2023, No. 1 Georgia won its third consecutive oar, as the Bulldogs dominated the game by the score, 43-20. Ladd McConkey caught six passes for a game-high 135 receiving yards and scored a touchdown. Running back Daijun Edwards also led all players in the game with 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as he made the most of his 15 rushing attempts.

Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State

  • Rivalry Began: October 28, 1901 at Mississippi State
  • Rivalry Name: Egg Bowl
  • Notable Games:
    • 2017 Week 14 Ole Miss 31-Mississippi State 28
    • 2019 Week 13 Mississippi State 21-Ohio State 20
    • 2023 Week 13 Ole Miss 17-Mississippi State 7

Rivalry History

The Egg Bowl has been around for more than a century, with the rivalry alternating between Starkville, Mississippi (Mississippi State) and Oxford, Mississippi (Ole Miss) each year.

In 2017, the Ole Miss Rebels jumped out to an early lead against the No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville, as the Rebels scored the first 10 points of the game. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs lost their starting quarterback Nick Fitzgerald early in the game, and it hurt them for the majority of the contest. Mississippi State scored just six points in the first three quarters and trailed, 24-6, as they entered the final 15 minutes. Backup quarterback Keytaon Thompson, who was a true freshman, helped the Bulldogs battle back with 22 fourth-quarter points, but it was Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, running back Jordan Wilkins, and wide receivers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf who led the Rebels to the 31-28 victory.

Then in 2019, there was an unbelievable finish to the Egg Bowl in Starkville. Mississippi State was leading by seven points and Ole Miss had the ball. Neither team had scored in the fourth quarter prior to the Rebels’ 82-yard drive with mere seconds left on the clock. Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral connected with Elijah Moore on a four-yard touchdown pass with just four seconds to go in the game. Moore celebrated too early and his exuberance cost the team a 15-yard penalty. Kicker Luke Logan then missed the long extra point attempt, and the Bulldogs fans went home happy with the 21-20 victory.

Then in 2023, the No. 12 Rebels went into Starkville and only allowed seven Mississippi State points. Ole Miss won, 17-7, as running back Quinshon Judkins ran for 119 yards and a touchdown. The win gave the Ole Miss Rebels an even larger lead in the all-time Egg Bowl series.
