Moneyline Explained

A moneyline bet is placed on a team or side to win outright. No point spread is involved. Some sportsbooks will offer moneylines for the 1st half, 2nd half, or any quarter. Odds for each side determine risk and win amounts.

The conference tournaments, March Madness, and the National Invitational tournament are all major events. That means sportsbooks will have a multitude of betting options available. Some may offer 3-way moneylines for big matchups. A 3-way moneyline includes odds for a tie or draw result, typically set for the first half of a college basketball game.

Sports betting sites almost always offer moneylines on March Madness games unless there’s a heavy favorite that would produce a -10,000 moneyline or higher. Some sportsbooks might not offer a moneyline for matchups with an overwhelming favorite. Instead, they’ll encourage players to bet the March Madness point spread or game total line instead.

Sports betting sites will post moneylines for upcoming matchups as tournament officials schedule them. Keep your eye on the numbers. They’ll likely change substantially as tip-off approaches. Unlike the regular season where games are scheduled out weeks in advance, you’ll often only have 1-2 days between tournament rounds to analyze a bet.

Placing a Moneyline Bet

Select “Moneyline” from your sportsbook’s betting menu. Next, select a game segment: game, 1st half, 2nd half, or quarter. Finally, select either the favorite or the underdog.

Pick the Favorite or the Underdog

Taking the Underdog
Underdogs have a plus sign next to their moneyline. A moneyline bet on the underdog wins if the underdog wins outright.

Taking the Favorite
Favorites have a minus sign next to their moneyline. A moneyline bet on the favorite wins if the favorite wins outright.

How to Bet on March Madness Moneylines

Time needed: 3 minutes

How to bet on March Madness Moneylines

  1. Tap to the sportsbook’s College Basketball page, look for the matchup you want to bet on.

Navigate to the sportsbook’s College Basketball page. Look for live or upcoming matchups. Your sportsbook may have a special “College Basketball Tournament” bracket or lineup.

  2. Choose the moneyline, game segment, and place your wager.

Sportsbooks will display March Madness game moneylines by default. Tap through the wagering menu to find 1st half, 2nd half, or quarter moneylines. Also review 3-way moneyline odds to bet on a 1st half tie, when available.

  3. The odds values next to the moneyline indicate risk and win amounts.

Minus values indicate how much you risk to win $100. A -250 moneyline means you risk $250 to win $100. Plus values indicate how much you win if you risk $100. A +800 moneyline means you risk $100 to win $800.

  4. Your bet wins if your team wins outright during the game segment you specified.

The underdog wins if they win outright. The favorite wins if they win outright. Review the result of each half or quarter if you bet a half or quarter moneyline.

  5. A tie, or draw, only pays when you bet a 3-way moneyline.

March Madness games cannot end in a tie. Therefore, a 3-way moneyline can only be offered for a half or quarter game segment. A wager on a tie only pays if the score is tied at the end of the particular game segment.
