- Historical Note – Walton scored 44 points (21-of-22 shooting) in the 1973 National Championship Game against Memphis State.
In one of the most dominant performances in NCAA history, Bill Walton scored 44 points en route to UCLA’s 87-66 destruction of the Memphis State Tigers. John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins finished the season 29-0, as Walton and the Bruins put on a show in the second half in St. Louis Arena.
Christian Laettner
- Team – Duke
- Coach – Mike Krzyzewski
- Tournament Result – Christian Laettner, the NCAA Player of the Year, led defending champion Duke to the National Championship in 1992.
- Historical Note – Laettner helped the Blue Devils dominate all season, and he made “The Shot” to win the overtime classic against Kentucky in the East Regional Final.
The Duke Blue Devils were trailing, 103-102, to the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats on March 28, 1992. Grant Hill then threw a very long pass to Christian Laettner, and Laettner gathered, dribbled, and made one of the best shots in sports history. The win sent the Blue Devils to the Final Four. After an 81-78 Final Four victory over No. 2 Indiana, Laettner led all scorers with 19 points in the National Championship, a 71-51 domination of the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines.
Magic Johnson
- Team – Michigan State
- Coach – Jud Heathcote
- Tournament Result – In 1979, NCAA Tournament MOP Magic Johnson led the Michigan State Spartans to their first National Championship.
- Historical Note – As only a sophomore, Magic Johnson keyed the Spartans’ run to the title, defeating Larry Bird and Indiana State in the National Championship Game.
Michigan State’s first National Championship came in historic fashion: the first matchup of many between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Johnson scored 24 points while registering seven rebounds and five assists en route to the 75-64 victory over No. 1 Indiana State in the 1979 National Championship Game.
Carmelo Anthony
- Team – Syracuse
- Coach – Jim Boeheim
- Tournament Result – NCAA Tournament MOP Carmelo Anthony Won the National Championship in 2003.
- Historical Note – Anthony made his only year of college count, as he delivered Syracuse a National Championship.
It was the 2002-03 season, and the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team was on the rise, and Carmelo Anthony was a young freshman looking to make an impact on the basketball world, and that he did. He led the Orange to a 30-5 record and dominated the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Anthony scored at least 20 points in the last three games of the tourney run and he put up 33 points in the 95-84 Final Four win over #1 Texas. The National Championship Game was a 81-78 win over No. 2 Kansas.
Kemba Walker
- Team – UConn
- Coach – Jim Calhoun
- Tournament Result – Kemba Walker won the NCAA Tournament MOP Award and National Championship in 2011.
- Historical Note – No. 3 UConn went through a rollercoaster ride of a tournament, as Walker was a dominant scorer en route to the title.
UConn became not only a women’s basketball powerhouse, but also a men’s basketball powerhouse. Kemba Walker can be thanked for the rise of the UConn program from 2008 to 2011. Walker dominated the Big East Tournament and continued his impressive scoring in the NCAA Tournament. Walker led all scorers with 16 points in the National Championship Game, a low-scoring 53-41 win over the No. 8 Butler Bulldogs.
Glen Rice
- Team – Michigan
- Coach – Steve Fisher
- Tournament Result – Glen Rice won the NCAA Tournament MOP Award and National Championship in 1989.

Head Coach Bill Frieder was fired prior to coaching in the 1989 NCAA Tournament after word leaked that Frieder would be taking over as the head coach of Arizona State after the season. Steve Fisher took over as the interim head coach, and he saw Rice take over. The No. 3 Michigan Wolverines played quite a few close games, but Rice led the team all the way to the title. His game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds led Michigan to the 80-79 overtime win over No. 3 Seton Hall in the National Championship Game.
Danny Manning
- Team – Kansas
- Coach – Larry Brown
- Tournament Result – Danny Manning won the NCAA Tournament MOP Award and National Championship in 1988.
- Historical Note – Manning led all scorers in the NCAA Tournament and scored 31 points en route to the 83-79 title win over Oklahoma.
When the Kansas Jayhawks were in a conference known as the Big 8, Hall of Fame Head Coach Larry Brown was at the helm, and he had star player Danny Manning. Manning played all four years at Kansas, and he dominated more and more every year. In his senior season, he was the NCAA Player of the Year and Tournament MOP, as “Danny and the Miracles” won it all as a No. 6 seed.
Larry Bird
- Team – Indiana State
- Coach – Bill Hodges
- Tournament Result – Larry Bird was one of the major highlights of the season, leading Indiana State to the National Championship Game in 1979.
- Historical Note – Bird was a one-man powerhouse at Indiana State, as he took the mid-major Sycamores to the Final Four and National Championship, but just fell short.
Larry Bird and Magic Johnson had such an amazing rivalry, but unfortunately for Bird’s collegiate career, he could not win the big one in 1979. That year, Bird was the NCAA Player of the Year as a senior and his Indiana State squad was stellar. The Sycamores went 31-0 heading into the National Championship Game, as Bird’s 35 points led all scorers in the Final Four victory over No. 2 DePaul.
