Moneyline Bets
Pick either the favorite or the underdog team to win. You’re simply picking the outright winner, just like a moneyline for any other sport.
Moneyline favorites have a minus sign “-” before their number. This number indicates how much you risk to win $100. For example, if the Astros are -160 favorites, you would risk $160 to win $100.
Moneyline underdogs have a plus sign “+” before their number. This number indicates how much you win if you risk $100. If Houston is a +140 underdog, you would risk $100 to win $140.
Betting an obvious favorite to win isn’t always a good idea, even if it’s for the Astros to win the game. Betting big moneyline favorites means you tie up a large amount of bankroll for a small profit. Sometimes it’s more economical to bet the run line instead.
Total Bets
Decide whether the sum of both teams’ final runs scored will be over or under the sportsbook’s total line.
Each side will have its own odds. Occasionally, both sides will have -110 standard odds. Over will be abbreviated as “o” and under will be abbreviated as “u”. Look for each side’s odds to the right of each letter.
With total bets, you have to consider ability of the Astros and their opponent to put runs on the board. Carefully determine whether the game will be a low-scoring matchup between both teams’ pitchers, or if the sluggers playing for Houston and their opponent will make it more of an offensive matchup.
High-scoring games typically will get higher total lines and more expensive over odds compared to lower-scoring games, which will get lower total lines and less expensive under odds.
Run Line Bets
The Houston Astros will be run line favorites when their line has a minus sign “-” before the number. They’ll be underdogs when the line has a plus sign “+” before the number. Run line values are commonly 1.5 runs. Oddsmakers will occasionally set a 2.5 run line for games between highly mismatched opponents.
The odds follow the run line. Standard betting odds are -110. That means you’ll risk $110 to win $100. However, most run lines will have distinct values for each side of the bet. For example, +115 for the run line underdog means you risk $100 to win $115. -140 for the run line favorite means you risk $140 to win $100.
