Preakness Trifecta Picks, I admit failure. I thought Justify wouldn’t be a factor at the Derby. I was dead wrong. Justify destroyed a talented derby field facing tough track conditions. Now he’s the odds-on horse for the “Run for Blackeyed Susans” at Pimlico. Hopefully the weather, and my predictions, will be better for the Triple Crown’s second leg.

What are Trifecta Boxes and Trifecta Wheels?
Trifecta boxes and part wheels are efficient ways to increase your odds of winning while preserving bankroll.
Trifecta Box: Pick any number of horses to finish in the top 3 positions. Final order does not matter.
Trifecta Part Wheel: Select horses to key into each position: first, second and third. Final order does matter depending on how you key each horse.
Notice the Preakness field is smaller than the Derby. That means we don’t need as many horses in each key. Keying 10 horses would be wasteful in the Preakness. But keying 10 for the Derby would make more sense given the larger field.
Efficiency Matters
Trifecta Boxes are more likely to win because final order does not matter. A box is less efficient than a wheel because you end up buying more combinations than you need.
Trifecta Part Wheels are harder to win because you must select and key horses correctly. However a part wheel is more efficient than a box. You will invest less bankroll to potentially win more money.
Preakness 2018 Trifecta Betting Advice
I recommend a 4 horse Trifecta Part Wheel, keying 2 horses in the first position, 3 horses in the second position, then 4 horses in the third. Why?
A 4 horse Trifecta Box costs $24, $1 per combination. But a 4 horse Trifecta Part Wheel using my recommendation is only $8, $1 per combination.
You save money because your third horse is excluded from the first key. Also, your fourth horse is excluded from both the first and second keys. Why pay for extra horses in the first key if you don’t think either can win!
You’ll be making a more efficient bet with higher profit potential. And you’ll be way ahead of the novices betting it all on one horse!
How to Key Horses in a Trifecta Part Wheel
Let’s assemble our Trifecta Part Wheel keys from the table above.
As of writing, Justify is the odds-on favorite. He started the Derby at 5/2 odds or +250. Don’t discount his 2½ length Kentucky Derby victory. Put Justify in all 3 keys.
Now let’s pick one more horse for the first key. Also add this horse to your 2nd and 3rd keys.
Good Magic’s second place finish at the Derby wasn’t too surprising. He started the race +1100 odds, tied with Magnum Moon. Magnum Moon was never a factor, finishing second to last. But Good Magic was the lone horse to challenge Justify on the homestretch finishing 2½ lengths behind.
Good Magic won the Grade 2 Blue Grass stakes at Keeneland on April 7, 2018. Previously he was 3rd at the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. His most recent Grade 1 victory was the November 2017 Breeders Cup Juvenile.
Next, we’ll add a third horse to our 2nd key. Also put this horse in the 3rd key.
Diamond King didn’t make the Derby. He recently won the Federico Tesio Stakes (Black Type) on April 21, 2018 at Laurel Park. His jockey, Javier Castellano, is no slouch, either! Previously, Diamond King was 3rd to Strike Power at the Grade 3 Swale Stakes.
Finally we’ll add a 4th and final horse to our 3rd key.
Quip is a favorite among exotic bettors. Like Justify, he’s owned by WinStar Farm, LLC. Trainer Randolph Brissette is no slouch, either. He recently won the G2 Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs on March 10, 2018, defeating 8 other horses.
