Can Animal Kingdom and All-Star jockey Johnny Velazquez do it again? If they did, it would once again put another horse in contention for the infamous Triple Crown. Unfortunately, even if Animal Kingdom does prevail this Saturday, the odds are stacked against him: we haven’t had a Triple Crown winner since the late 1970s, during the “Secretariat” and “Seattle Slew” era. A 2011 Triple Crown would surely light up the horse racing community, but even the hardcore horse players are waiting with baited breath.
The public favorite heading into this Saturday’s race is obviously Animal Kingdom, currently at +200 odds. Dialed In and Mucho Macho Man follow at +450 and +500 respectively. Nehro was supposed to fit in somewhere in that mix, but scratched and will not be running the 2011 Preakness. Another horse scratched as well, allowing 2 Preakness Stakes alternates the go ahead to join the race: Concealed Identity at +2500 and Isn’t He Perfect at +2000. If the Kentucky Derby taught us anything, it’s that long shots quite OFTEN do come in – (ahem!) Animal Kingdom at +3000 heading into the race – so don’t count these alternates out, especially if you’re looking for a good value bet. Check out our Preakness Betting page for a full lineup of all the horses, including owner, trainer, and jockey.
