About the Game to Overtime Prop Bet

Decide whether or not a college football game will go to overtime. Bet “No” if you think the game will end after regulation time, or bet “Yes” if you think 1 or more overtimes will be required to determine a winner.

The most likely outcome, or favorite side, will have minus odds. In most cases, this will be “No”. A minus value indicates how much you risk to win $100. If the odds for “No” are -1000, you’d risk $1,000 to win $100. Similarly, if the odds are -500, you’d risk $500 to win $100.

The less likely outcome, or underdog side, will have plus odds. This will usually be the case for “Yes”. A plus value indicates how you much win if you risk $100. If the odds for “Yes” are +1500, you’d win $1,500 for risking $100. Likewise, if the odds are +3000, you’d win $3,000 for a $100 bet.

Most of the time, odds for each side will be far apart. For example, “Yes” might be +1150 and “No” -3000. Odds will be closer when there’s actually a good chance a game will go to overtime.

Current College Football Overtime Rules

If a college football game is tied after the fourth quarter, representatives of each team return to midfield for another coin toss by the referee. The winner of the toss chooses whether to start on offense or defense, or they can choose to defend a certain end of the field and allow the other team to pick whether to start on offense or defense. This is typically only done when wind is enough of a factor that it could affect the kicking game. The loser of the coin toss gets to pick first among these options for a second and further even-numbered OT periods.

Overtime Timeouts

The timeouts reset to one for each team per overtime period, and the game clock is turned off. Only the play clock is used. The game ends when one team is ahead after each has a possession in a given OT period.

Overtimes 1 and 2

For the first overtime, each team gets one possession that begins at the opponent’s 25-yard line. The possession lasts until a team either scores a touchdown, field goal, or turns the ball over via downs, interception, or fumble.

The format for the second OT is the same as the first–with the exception that a team must go for a two-point conversion from the 3-yard line if they score a touchdown on their possession.

Overtimes 3 or More

Starting with the third overtime, teams bypass the traditional possession. Instead, each get one attempt at a two-point conversion play from the 3-yard line. This continues indefinitely until there is a winner.
