All-Time Undefeated College Basketball Teams
The following is the all-time list of College Basketball teams with undefeated regular seasons. We’ve also notated their tournament results if applicable.
1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers
- Record – 32-0
- Coach – Bob Knight
- Top Players – Scott May, Kent Benson, and Tom Abernethy
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (86-68) versus Michigan
- Key Matchup – Won in Elite Eight (65-56) versus No. 2 Marquette
Bob Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers, led by senior Scott May, were the ultimate Big Ten Conference basketball team in 1975-76, as the Hoosiers went a perfect 18-0 in the conference and 32-0 overall. May averaged more than 23 ppg, and junior Kent Benson contributed 17.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg. They also had a couple of seniors who were among the top scorers: Tom Abernethy (10.0) and Quinn Buckner (8.9).
Not only was Indiana a strong offensive team, but the team was also one of the nation’s best defensive teams. After beating Lou Carnesecca’s St. John’s Red Storm by 20 points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Knight’s squad went on to allow fewer than 70 points the rest of the way. Indiana won the next three games against Alabama (74-69), Marquette (65-56), and UCLA (65-51).
Then Indiana beat Michigan in the 1976 National Championship Game in blowout fashion. Kent Benson was named the 1976 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
1972-73 UCLA Bruins
- Record – 30-0
- Coach – John Wooden
- Top Players – Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes, and Larry Farmer
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (87-66) versus Memphis
- Key Matchup – Won in Final Four (70-59) versus No. 6 Indiana
John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins were a powerhouse in college basketball, and there will be plenty of mentions throughout this page. The 1972-73 team was the final Wooden-led squad to be undefeated and the second of Bill Walton’s stellar career. Many basketball fans are used to Walton’s excitement as a broadcaster, but long before he was entertaining television audiences, he was one of the best players in college basketball history.
In 1972-73, Walton led the Pac-8 Conference in rebounding (16.9 rpg) and was second in points (20.4 ppg). Walton and company dominated their conference matchups. After winning the Pac-8 Conference, they set their sights on their seventh consecutive National Championship.
The UCLA Bruins won every NCAA Tournament game by more than 10 points, as they cruised to Wooden’s ninth career National Title. Walton played fantastically and was the 1973 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Wooden would win his 10th and final one in 1975.
1971-72 UCLA Bruins
- Record – 30-0
- Coach – John Wooden
- Top Players – Bill Walton, Henry Bibby, and Jamaal Wilkes
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (81-76) versus Florida State
- Key Matchup – Won in Final Four (96-77) versus No. 4 Louisville
Hall of Famer Bill Walton and the 1971-72 UCLA Bruins, led by Hall of Fame coach John Wooden, were equally as good as the 1972-73 Bruins. They dominated on both sides of the court, as they finished in the top eight in both offense and defense.
It was another amazing season for Walton as he averaged 21.1 ppg and 15.5 rpg in his sophomore year. As usual, Walton and the Bruins dominated their way through Pac-8 Conference play and won the conference.
In the tournament, UCLA blew out Weber State, Jerry Tarkanian’s Long Beach State, and Denny Crum’s Louisville Cardinals. The Bruins’ two wins to get them into the National Championship were very impressive, as Long Beach State finished fifth in the final AP poll while Louisville finished fourth.
Then in the National Championship Game, UCLA defeated Florida State, 81-76. Walton was also named the 1972 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
1966-67 UCLA Bruins
- Record – 30-0
- Coach – John Wooden
- Top Players – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lucius Allen, and Lynn Shackelford
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (79-64) versus Dayton
- Key Matchup – Won in Final Four (73-58) versus Houston
After missing the 1965-66 NCAA Tournament, the 1966-67 UCLA Bruins bounced back in a big way. Their powerful offense – led by Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – destroyed the competition in the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU), which would later be known as the Pac-8, then the Pac-10, and eventually the Pac-12.
The Bruins went a perfect 14-0 in conference play. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was second in the nation in scoring (29.0 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (15.5).
Abdul-Jabbar had a very strong 1967 NCAA Tournament and was the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. John Wooden’s squad went on to win every NCAA Tournament game by at least 15 points en route to a very impressive 1967 National Title.
1963-64 UCLA Bruins
- Record – 30-0
- Coach – John Wooden
- Top Players – Gail Goodrich, Walt Hazzard, and Keith Erickson
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (98-83) versus Duke
- Key Matchup – Won in Final Four (90-84) versus Kansas State
The 1963-64 UCLA Bruins also went 30-0, as John Wooden captured his first perfect season. This time around, it was junior guard Gail Goodrich who was the team’s leading scorer with 21.5 ppg. Senior guard Walt Hazzard scored 18.6 per contest.
UCLA cruised through its regular season en route to the AAWU conference championship, but then had some very close contests to begin the NCAA Tournament.
UCLA won its first three games by just an average of five points per game: a five-point win over Seattle, a four-point win against San Francisco, and a six-point victory against Kansas State.
Then came the National Championship Game. UCLA blew out Duke to capture its third National Title in four years. Walt Hazzard was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
1956-57 North Carolina Tar Heels
- Record – 32-0
- Coach – Frank McGuire
- Top Players – Lennie Rosenbluth, Pete Brennan, and Tommy Kearns
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (54-53) versus Kansas
- Key Matchup – Won (87-71) versus No. 9 Duke on December 28, 1956
In just their fourth season in the ACC, the North Carolina Tar Heels dominated the conference. The Tar Heels went 14-0 in conference play and were led by Lennie Rosenbluth (28.0 ppg and 8.8 rpg) and Pete Brennan (14.7 and 10.4). Under Frank McGuire, the Tar Heels were trending upward heading into the 1956-57 season, as they went 18-5 overall (11-3 conference) the previous year.
UNC went on a great run to start the NCAA Tournament: the Tar Heels had double-digit wins over Yale and Canisius. Then, UNC beat Syracuse and Michigan State to make the National Championship Game.
The North Carolina Tar Heels won their first National Championship in a very close title game and became just the second team to go undefeated in the history of college basketball.
1955-56 San Francisco Dons
- Record – 29-0
- Coach – Phil Woolpert
- Top Players – Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, and Mike Farmer
- NCAA Tournament Result – Won NCAA National Championship Game (83-71) versus Iowa
- Key Matchup – Won in Final Four (86-68) versus No. 7 Southern Methodist
The 1955-56 San Francisco Dons became the first team in college basketball history to go undefeated in a single season. They almost accomplished the feat in 1954-55, as they went 28-1 overall (12-0 conference) en route to the school’s first National Championship in men’s basketball.
In the 1955-56 season, the Dons continued to be unstoppable in the California Basketball Association, as they went 14-0 to win the conference championship. Bill Russell was other-worldly, as he went for 20.6 ppg and 21.0 rpg in 1955-56. No other San Francisco Don player averaged double digits in points or rebounds that season.
Russell’s Dons went on to win every game by double digits en route to their second National Title in a row. Surprisingly, Russell – the 1955 NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player – did not repeat as the Most Outstanding Player in 1956.
