The No. 22 Oregon Ducks (10-4, 7-2), Penn State Nittany Lions (7-6, 4-5), and No. 5 Baylor Bears (12-2, 7-2) all finished 2021 with above-.500 records overall. Here is how they fared to end last season:
- Oregon: lost 47-32 to No. 16 Oklahoma in the Valero Alamo Bowl
- Penn State: lost 24-10 to No. 21 Arkansas in the Outback Bowl
- Baylor: won 21-7 against No. 8 Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl
The three squads are set to begin the 2022 season in early September. The most notable of the three Week 1 contests is Oregon taking on the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Thursday, September 1 (8:00 PM) – Penn State @ Purdue
- Saturday, September 3 (3:30 PM) – Oregon vs. Georgia
- Saturday, September 3 (7:00 PM) – Albany @ Baylor

Oregon Ducks
- Current Futures Odds: +5000
- Head Coach – Dan Lanning
- Conference – Pac-12
- Quarterback battle – between Bo Nix, Ty Thompson, and Jay Butterfield
The departures of quarterback Anthony Brown, running back Travis Dye (team-high 1,271 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns), and wide receiver Devon Williams will not make it easy for the 2022 Ducks. Auburn transfer Bo Nix has the most experience of the remaining quarterbacks, so Nix should start as the school waits for five-star quarterback Dante Moore in 2023. After replacing Mario Cristobal, Dan Lanning will have his work cut out for him in his first year, but he does have a strong offensive line, which includes seniors Alex Forsyth and T.J. Bass.
Penn State
- Current Futures Odds: +6000
- Head Coach – James Franklin
- Conference – Big Ten
- Quarterback – Sean Clifford
Senior Sean Clifford is back to lead the Nittany Lions into the 2022 season, as Penn State looks for its best season since it dominated the Big Ten in 2019 (11-2, 7-2). The 2019 season was Clifford’s first as a starter, and it was head coach James Franklin’s third 11-win season at Penn State. Unfortunately, Clifford will be without his favorite receiver Jahan Dotson, who was drafted by Washington Commanders after leading the team with 1,182 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021. Receiver Parker Washington and running back Keyvone Lee will hope to pick up the slack.
Baylor
- Current Futures Odds: +6600
- Head Coach – Dave Aranda
- Conference – Big 12
- Quarterback – Blake Shapen
It was Gerry Bohanon who solidified the Bears’ 21-7 bowl victory with a two-yard pass to wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on New Year’s Day. The win was Baylor’s fifth consecutive one to end the season. Sophomore Blake Shapen did not record a statistic in the bowl game, but he will be the starter to begin the 2022 season after throwing just 86 passes in his freshman year. Unfortunately, receivers Thronton and Drew Estrada as well as running backs Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner are now in the NFL. Maybe wide receiver R.J. Sneed and tight end Ben Sims can fill in for their absences.
