Preakness Superfecta Picks
Here are my picks for a winning Preakness superfecta part wheel bet. Enter the following horses in each superfecta key. Then, cash an easy winning ticket at the Preakness Stakes.
Straight Superfecta Picks
Let’s begin with my straight superfecta bet picks. Note each selection must be correct for the bet to win. If you want more flexibility, review the superfecta part wheel picks below.
Straight Superfecta Picks
- 1: Catching Freedom
- 2: Mystik Dan
- 3: Just Steel
- 4: Imagination
Superfecta Part Wheel Picks
Here are my picks for a winning Preakness Stakes superfecta part wheel bet. Enter the following horses in each superfecta key. This bet offers you a little more room for error than the straight superfecta bet.
Part Wheel Keys
- 1: Catching Freedom, Tuscan Gold
- 2: Catching Freedom, Tuscan Gold, Mystik Dan
- 3: Mystik Dan, Just Steel, Imagination
- 4: Imagination, Seize the Grey, Uncle Heavy
Total Cost: $26, $1 per combination
Ways to Bet Superfectas
You can bet superfectas 3 ways. The most common is the straight superfecta. This bet is notoriously hard to win.
Boxes and wheels allow more flexibility in exchange for higher upfront cost. You can add more than 4 horses to your superfecta boxes and wheels. This increases the likelihood of winning.
The following video explains how to place a wheel bet. The procedure is the same for exactas and trifectas. Watch the entire video for help with other bets!
- Straight Superfecta Bet – Pick 4 horses to finish in the top 4 positions. Final order matters.
- Superfecta Box Bet – Pick any number of horses to finish in the top 4 positions. Final order does not matter.
- Superfecta Part Wheel Bet – Select horses to key into each position: first, second, third and fourth. Final order does matter depending on how you key each horse.

Efficiency Matters
Superfecta Boxes are more likely to win because final order does not matter. A box is less efficient than a wheel because you end up buying more combinations than you need.
Superfecta Part Wheels are harder to win because you must select and key horses correctly. Part Wheels are more efficient than boxes. You will invest less bankroll to potentially win more money.
Preakness Stakes Superfecta Betting Advice
I recommend a 7 horse Superfecta Part Wheel, keying 2 horses in the first position, 3 horses in the second position, 3 horses in the third position and 3 in the fourth. Let’s learn why these Preakness Superfecta picks are best bet in a part wheel.
Suppose We Box our 7 Horses?
A 7 horse Superfecta box costs $840!
That’s a big risk compared to our $26 part wheel. Boxes are more flexible: order doesn’t matter, and any of the 7 must finish in the top 4. But if it fails, you’re out $840 which could be most of your rent or mortgage payment.
The $26 7 horse part wheel is more manageable. It’s not as risky as its inefficient box cousin.

How to Key Horses in a Superfecta Part Wheel
I recommend a 7 horse Superfecta Part Wheel, keying 2 horses in the first position, then 3 varying horses in the second, third and fourth positions. Here’s why:
A 4 horse Superfecta Part Wheel using my recommendation is only $26, $1 per combination. With only 9 or so horses scheduled to run, it’s a cheap date at Pimlico this weekend.
Put the most likely winners in the first key. Then enter other probable top finishers in the remaining three keys. Why pay for extra horses in the first key if you don’t think they can win?
Invest your Superfecta money wisely or go broke.
Now you’ll have 26 possible winning combinations versus the novice who bets everything on one horse. Best of all, the return-on-investment will be much higher!
Preakness Superfecta Part Wheel Keys
Let’s assemble our Superfecta Part Wheel keys from the table above.
Key 1
Though Catching Freedom wound up fourth at the Kentucky Derby, I still think he has a solid chance at winning the Preakness. He’ll need to stay towards the front and keep his formidable kick in reserve.
Catching Freedom’s commanding win at the 2024 G2 Louisiana Derby on March 23, 2024, came with a 95 finishing speed rating, with a final time of 1:56.16. Though his outing at the G2 Risen Star Stakes on February 17, 2024 was less successful finishing in third place, Catching Freedom’s victory at the January 1, 2024, LS Smarty Jones Stakes shouldn’t be disregarded.
Now let’s pick another horse for the first key.
Tuscan Gold hasn’t run since the G2 Louisiana Derby on March 23, 2024, where he finished third to Catching Freedom. Well rested with an improving speed rating, he has a solid chance of finishing in the top four, if not winning the Preakness outright.
Key 2
Add both Catching Freedom and Tuscan Gold to the 2nd key. Next, we’ll add a third horse.
Mystik Dan was the surprise 18-1 longshot winner at this year’s Kentucky Derby, holding off the closers in the final furlongs of the race. Before the Derby, he was third at the 2024 G1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on March 30, 2024. He won the G3 Southwest Stakes on February 3, 2024, also at Oaklawn Park.
Key 3
We’ll reuse Mystik Dan in the 3rd key. The other 2 horses in the 3rd key will be Just Steel and Imagination.
Despite a lackluster 17th place finish at the Kentucky Derby, I have high hopes for Just Steel. He’s already raced other horses in the field, finishing second at both the Arkansas Derby and the Southwest Stakes.
Imagination was second at the April 6, 2024 Santa Anita Derby. Before that, he won the G2 San Felipe Stakes – also held at Santa Anita Park – on March 3, 2024.
Key 4
Finally, we come to the 4th and final key. Let’s reuse Imagination. Then add Seize the Grey and Uncle Heavy.
Seize the Grey won the G2 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on May 4, 2024. He finished out of the money at this year’s G1 Blue Grass Stakes on April 6, 2024, despite finishing third at the March 23, 2024 G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks on March 23, 2024.
Uncle Heavy last raced at the G2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 6, 2024, where he wound up fifth. He won the G3 Withers Stakes on February 3, 2024.
MSW Abbreviation: MSW means “Maiden Special Weight”. It’s an event reserved for horses who have never won a race.
MCL Abbreviation: MCL means “Maiden Claiming Weight”. It’s an event reserved for horses who have never won a race. Unlike the MSW, trainers may claim a horse for a fixed price.

7 Horse Superfecta Part Wheel
Here’s how to reuse this 7 horse superfecta part wheel for any other race. Remember, you need to put certain horses in each superfecta key, reusing some horses in multiple keys. This type of wager can be both cheaper and more efficient than a superfecta box, which forces you to pay for all possible winning combinations.
Each letter represents a different horse. Horses A, B, C, and E appear in multiple keys while Horse D only appears in Key 3 and Horses F and G only appear in Key 4.
- 1: A, B
- 2: A, B, C
- 3: C, D, E
- 4: E, F, G
Total Cost: $26, $1 per combination
Preakness Stakes Superfecta FAQs
Select one or more horses for the first, second, third, and fourth keys. Your bet wins if a horse from each of your keys finishes in the respective finishing position: a horse from key 1 wins, a horse from key 2 finishes second, a horse from key 3 finishes third, and horse from key 4 finishes fourth.
A superfecta part wheel is more efficient than a superfecta box bet of equal number of horses because it is more efficient. You’re not paying for every possible winning combination. Instead, you’re only paying for a set of the most likely outcomes.
Preakness Stakes Superfecta bets cost $1 each or 10 cents where available. Superfecta part wheel bets cost $1 or 10 cents per winning combination, determined by the number of horses you add to each key.
